"honey, your reputation is sh!t in this town."

naked mughsots. awwwwww yeah.

i was telling dave about bad news the other day. so now i'm telling you.

"a couple of girls made me kiss them after our last show. they made me." (note to self: it's not that hard to get them to kiss you. as long as you remember that a kiss is not a contract.)

last night when i was reading that, i discovered that adam horovitz is married to kathleen hanna. i had no idea!!! i loved bikini kill.

that wiki entry led me to read about "over the edge," which is one of the greatest 70's teen movies ever. i first saw it on tv when i was in high school, and then it was on again so i taped it, and then i found it at a used record store on vhs for $5. it has good music, matt dillon, and the kids blow up the school at the end. but not in a campy "rock n' roll high school" kind of way. then i read (and remembered) that kurt cobain loved this movie. coincidentally, i rocked out in my car to nirvana the other day for the first time in years and years. it was fun, but made me feel old. i remembered how i was obsessed i was (much like the rest of the universe) with "nevermind" when it came out, not long after i graduated high school. in 1991. which was 16 years ago. when did i get old?!?!? that was a good time for music, though. i wasn't into "grunge" bands so much as i was into the riot grrrl bands. i loved hole (yes, i am admitting that. i was all about "pretty on the inside" and every b-side and 7" and demo and what have you. "live through this" was good, i guess, but i turned on courtney soon after it came out. i turned on her for many reasons, but i really didn't like the slicker versions of those older songs. especially "doll parts." once upon a time i *loved* that song. i hated the way is sounded on "live through this." HATED IT. but the timing of the album's release made it important, i guess. courtney just started totally sucking as a human being, and continues to do so. so, f her.

(later: in honor of this post, i am wearing my sonic youth "dirty" shirt and a white plastic little girl's barrette in my hair. viva la 1992!)

f*@k da police

saw the police last night. my opinion? move over, the who show of summer 2000! you have been replaced with a new "worst concert ever!"
first of all, the venue is one mere hour away from us, and it took us like 3 hours to get there. the traffic situation was not good. but fine, whatever...we anticipated this, so we got there in plenty of time to get some much-needed food and drinks and visits to the port-o-pottys (which is always SUCH a joy). but the weather was awesome. sunny with a nice cool breeze. we missed the opening band, which was also a plus. the police played everything you'd expect them to, and a few of them sounded decent. one or two actually sounded good. but most of them were just AWFUL. my favorite po-po song, "don't stand so close to me," was really slow and he sang the whole song in the lower register and all jazzy...ick. it just didn't work. like i said, there were a few songs that sounded good, like "every little thing she does is magic." i never was all gung-ho about that song before, but it stands out because it was apparently the best they could do last night. "synchronicity II" was good. "wrapped around your finger" was okay. but ohhhhhh, mostly it was just so boring and bad. at one point, kenny & john & i were talking about what they're going to do with the hardwood flooring in their spare room. while the police were on stage. the talking amongst the crowd was pretty loud in general. oh, and there was pan flute. need i say more?

so, we left at the encore, which i never, ever do (except at the aforementioned who show. we can discuss that another time). but we were thinking this was a smart move and we could get out of the venue easier. HA! practically the whole damn place left early, they were all like, "screw these guys, we're goin' home!" friends of ours that was a few rows behind us called and said they looked over and our entire section was gone. so we sat in that parking lot trying to get out for 2 hours. freakin' literally. like, we seriously moved just a few yards in 2 hours. it was really awful. then, after we managed to actually get on the highway, we still sat in traffic for who knows how long. we got in the car to leave at 10:30 and i didn't get home until 2 am. all in all, it was a 10-hour ordeal. it was a nightmare. it was a debacle. it was horrible. it was a disaster. it might have been better if the show didn't suck so bad...but it did. it sucked so bad. and, if you read my post yesterday, you will note that i woke up at 4:30 am. i didn't fall asleep until 3:30 am. i was up for 23 hours (save fore the 15 minutes or so of dozing off i did in the car. DAMN. those bastards. that douchebag and his pan flute. i hate them.

yes, that guy on the right is emo phillips.

i had such a nice day today...i slept in, got sushi with miss margy, got a cool vintage shirt at flashback's after lunch, and later went out for martinis with my mans. we sat outside and it was just lovely. and last night i had a big gay dance party in my living room! it was awesome. "buffalo stance," anyone? anyway, my boys were all bummed because their morrissey show got canceled. i hope i was a suitable substitute. ha. i'm sure i SO wasn't, dancing around the house drunkenly, as i am apt to do...but we can't have everyone gazing at their shoes, sad and depressed, now can we?

right now i am watching "the song remains the same" on vh1 classic while the man and the cat are sleeping. i haven't seen this since high school. and it's just not sitting well with me. don't get me wrong, i LOVE zeppelin. deeply. but this particular concert (or rather, concerts edited together) just doesn't do it for me. and these little vignettes with them riding horses and swordfighting and being pirates and wearing cloaks and getting all mystical...uggggh. no thanks. although i have always enjoyed robert plant's pants...

simpsons movie goodness! play the wrecking ball game! make your own simpsons guy!

top cult shows ever. my faves? #30, 29, 26, 24, 21, 15, 13, 12, 9, 8, 7, 6, and, yes, 1. i admit it. i like star trek.

oh, sweet! vh1 classic is now playing "traveling riverside blues," which was all over mtv in 1990 and was included on the zeppelin box set, which i got for Christmas that year--on cassette! YEAH! i was so happy. i haven't heard this in a long time, either. anyway, moving on:

i think we are going here tomorrow, just because we were talking about it tonight. it's so close, and it's weird that neither of us ever thought to go there before. maybe it's not interesting at all. in my head, it looks like "edward scissorhands" there, but i'm sure it really doesn't.

'cause we got our recruits and our green mohair suits...

it's no secret that i love the flying burrito brothers. the mighty pcl linkdump posted the video for "sin city," and i'm gonna post it too, goshdarnit.

also, tomorrow is international talk like bob dylan day. and it's also his birthday. see ya in exactly one month, bobby boy! so tomorrow you and a friend can go sit in a field or the woods or something, and one of you can sing like bob dylan, and the other can do this. you can have yourself a little hootenanny!

those glorious shins

they were wonderful. really really great. they sounded good and played many of my favorites. although i don't think i will be sitting in the balcony again anytime soon...for once, i just wanted to sit down and drink beer and be mellow and not have to stand in a squished crowd all night...but it kinda sucks up there. people were just hanging out and talking, as if they were at a regular bar. so weird! i mean, the freaking shins are playing right in front of you...why did you dole out all the $$$ for a ticket if you don't really care? odd. but, on the plus side, there was a waitress bringing me my heinekens and the bathroom was mere steps away. so who knows. oh, and on a crazy sidenote, i realized that my 17-year-old niece was at the show, too!! she's so cool.

this is surpisingly awesome

karen elson (model & mrs. jack white) and melissa auf der maur (ex-bassist for hole and smashing pumpkins) doing a danzig cover at the chelsea hotel. i think they sound really, really cool together. if they recorded an album together i would totally buy it.

and, for good measure, here's mr. karen elson jamming with pete townsend (who happens to have the same birthday as me. woo!)

show me that smile again

so, last night i had a very long and involved dream about kirk cameron. my cat gertie and i were staying with him and his wife, for some reason, and i picked up a tabloid magazine and there were all these pictures of him in there, as a teenager, in VERY compromising positons. i will spare you the details. so i showed them to him, and he got ALL WEIRD and told me i had to leave the house while he took a "long, cold shower." ?!?!?!?
on my way out the door, i saw his wife in the kitchen. (his wife, by the way, was this chick that my boyfriend of like 13 years ago went out with a few years after me.) anyway, they had this AMAZING kitchen cabinet set-up that i have never seen in real-life before...it was like a huge armoire with these drawer things to pull out, and that's where all the stuff was stored...it was carved in this really cool vintage-looking pattern...i think i need to draw this and have someone custom-make it for me! and i have kirk cameron's fake wife that only exists in my subconscious to thank for it.

on a completely unrelated note, chris and i saw this video the other day and were all kinds of impressed. i think you will be, too. i have no idea how old it is (at least a month or two), but i'm not exactly, you know, "with it" and stuff when it comes to the latest videos.

sunday morning post a-go-go

good morning! so. last night we went to little steven's underground rock show a-go-go, and it was SUCH a blast! the zombies were the headliners, and the main reason i got the tickets, but honestly they were the low point of the evening for me. the inside of the TLA looked like a circus tent/electric psychedelic pussycat swingers club, complete with b/w films showing on the walls (some spaceman movie, clips from "hullabaloo," etc.) and there were four 60's-looking go-go girls that danced all night long. it was great. local philly band jukebox zeros played first, and i really liked them. next were the woggles, whom my internet friend shankey told me were incredible---and they were. they were SO MUCH FUN! i totally loved them. next was the fleshtones, who were a pleasant surprise; i didn't realize they were on the bill. at one point there were about 50 people on stage with them. part of me wanted to jump up there, but i just stayed put, for some reason. after that we had the mooney suzuki, whom i was indifferent about until i saw them. they totally won me over. they were loud and rockin' and fun and just really great. and i had no idea they sang that one song that is in some car commercial. i was like, "why do i suddenly have the urge to run out and buy a suzuki??" every band that played jumped out into the crowd and just ROCKED OUT...it was really one of the most fun shows i've been to in a looooong time. people were jusst dancing, drinking, loving it...the venue wasn't super-crowded, so there were NO LINES for beer or the bathroom. insane!!!

anyway, the zombies came out last and were...okay. yeah, just okay. i don't know what was wrong with their performance...i think the songs were just a teeny bit too aggressive. the zombies are indeed garage rock, i guess...but they are more subdued than, say, the kinks or whomever. they have a spooky, mellow, trippy sound. and last night it just seemed like they were trying to keep up with all the youngin's on this tour and kick it up a notch. and it just didn't work for me. the drums were too aggressive or something. but, i'm not gonna sit here and say that i wasn't psyched to see songs like "care of cell 44," "time of the season," "tell her no," and "she's not there" live. i mean, that's pretty cool.

after shaking my boo-tay all night long, i think today is going to be a lazy day. we may hit up the farmer's market later, and stop by this thing called riverfest and check it out and get something horribly bad for us to eat...i must also conserve my energy because...tomorrow night is the raconteurs! i am SO EXCITED!!! i need me some jack white. and it will be nice to see my matty boombalatty, who is meeting us at the show.

oh, i almost forgot...at the end of the workday on friday, i was informed that i got a promotion of sorts! a marketing position opened up, and i went for it, and i got it! yay me! i am really, really happy about this. it's a little bit more money, but more importantly it's just a better job than what i've got now. i like the company i work for, so i am glad to be able to advance internally instead of having to get another job somewhere else. well, ideally i would not be working for anyone else at all...in my fantasy dream land, i would have my own store, where i sell my jewelry, along with vintage clothes, records, kitsch, crazy art, etc. but hey. that's not happening right now, so i am lucky to have a job that i can deal with. the only thing that makes me sad is i will not me working side by side with my beloved kenny anymore...i'll be all the way in the NEXT ROOM!!!! *gasp* i don't know if we will be able to survive the split.

p.s. i just got these shoes, and they are so cool that i just had to share.

did you miss me?

ugh, i am sore, achey, stressed-out, exhuasted, and overwhelmed. i also owe everyone in the world emails. :/ it may be a while until i get caught up again...this house is sooooooo much work. and it's been soooo friggin' HOT the past week! but, our next-door neighbors gave us a fresh pan of brownies last night, so things are lookin' up. :) i thought that was so cute and old-school of them to give us baked goods to welcome us to the 'hood. below are just a few pictures of what's been going on with the house...i can't wait to get the floors sanded and stained, and to paint everything. then it will seem like we are actually getting somewhere.

this is what the living room and dining room looked like when we owned it for approx. one hour, right before chris ripped out all the carpet in the entire house:

awwww, look, we're not completely insane yet! i miss those days...

bastard wallpaper paste.

f you, wallpaper!!!

and now, some linkage. i honestly have no idea what's been going on for the past week. one thing that is exciting to me, however, is this newly-discovered version of "something." i heart george.

oh, and I'M # 4 NOW!!! please keep voting, this is incredible!!! tell your freinds, tell your mom, tell your weird internet-addicted uncle. vote for mondo!!!

i think i'll drink a few for jim morrison tonight.

maybe i'll have one for michael mcclure while i'm at it...just for good measure. he's not dead or anything, but he deserves a drink in his honor, too, i reckon... i met him once. he was nice.

i can almost hear my boyfriend groaning, "oh, GREAT..." as he reads this. i'm sure he is envisioning me drunkenly singing along to doors songs and watching DVDs and talking about how into them i used to be and generally being a silly goose. i'll try to control myself, honey. :) and don't be bringing home no sixer of tall budweisers!!

anyway, yeah... today is the day jim morrison died.

so, rest in peace, jim . :/

too bad jim never did a drug freak-out classroom scare film...

i wonder if jim's "wife" will have anything interesting to say today...

you KNOW you want these childhood drawings. you KNOW you want them.

let's not forget brian jones, who also passed away on this day.

these talking cats freak me out!!! the one at the end sounds like an old drunk man, crying.

the american roadside.

are you too old for myspace?

cheesy movies.

drive-in movie ads.

so, are you in the office today? are you annoyed because of that? because we should totally have today off in addition to tomorrow, right?! grrrr.

interview with little steven "silvio" van zandt. i so totally love this guy.

oop!

...because he's gay. i know someone who knows someone who knows him (tee hee), and this person says he's gay. not that there's anything wrong with that. we all know that i love my gays.

i've never been so proud to be german.

the other batch of records i scored at the giant community yard sale-o-rama was purchased from a really nice older german lady. she had a stack of 10 or so albums on a table full of other stuff. i started flipping through them and was, like, MESMERIZED by this guy on nearly every cover. i said to chris something along the lines of, "i have to have these!!" and she got all excited: "ahhh, you know heino?!" i said, "no, but i like the way he looks!" her son was standing there, and said, "please buy them!! i had to listen to that guy my whole life!!" and we all laughed. i asked her how much for the whole lot. "five dollars is fair price, no?" of course it was! so now they're all mine. she tried to get me to eat some german cookies, too. awwwww. anyway, apparently heino is a pretty big deal in germany (he even has an impersonator, ala elvis), and he has a weird bulgy-eye disease.

oh, and as if that wasn't satisfying enough, i found this rad glossy photo of some weird-ass band from who-knows-when in one of the heino albums. :)

also got some german beer drinking songs...

and would you just look at this guy! HE RULES.

and what the heck are these doing in the mix? ahhhh, so great. i think this was my best record day ever.
