welly welly well well well...

i don't know why i don't blog anymore...well, that's a lie. i totally know why. a) i am too lazy to look around for cool links in my free time, b) i don't have that much free time, and c) i'm totally over it. i think, if i'm going to blog again, i need some kind of schtick, some kind of theme, some kind of funny angle to make it more interesting. meh.

but, i have had a bunch of people admonish me for not updating the blog, so here's the update! first what's going on with me, and then some links. maybe the LAST LINKS EVER!!! *gasp*!!

so, the holidays are winding down. thank goodness. i am so partied-and-fooded out. i got some groovy gifts, though. chris got me not one but TWO new ukes!!! one is a good one, and the other is a "crap" one. but it's pink!!!! a cute pink girlie uke, wheeeeee! it's just screaming out for a glittery hello kitty sticker or something. the good uke is awesome, it's an ohana and sounds infinitely better than the busted old johnson uke. i also got a million felt picks. chris also got me a new digital camera and pulp fiction action figures! awww, my mans. he's nifty. oh yeah, he also got me a set of miniature furniture from hong kong...a bed, 2 dressers (with working drawers) a table, 4 chairs, and a rocking chair. they are all painted with a cool asian design...oh, did i mention that they are all butane lighters?!?!? uh-huh. they are awesome! right now the wolf and jimmie from pulp fiction are at the table, drinking coffee (lotsa cream, lotsa sugar) and bloody vincent is on the bed, pointing a gun at bloody jules, who is standing on top of a dresser pointing a gun at vincent. yes, i am 34 years old and still play with action figures. i used the bed to light my cigarette earlier. cue "beds are burning" by midnight oil!!! ha.

i got a lot of other fun things, too. i have the greatest fam and friends ever! i cooked Christmas Dinner this year for mark and margaret and margy's brother harris. it was delicious. i made turkey, homemade mashed potatoes, homemade gravy, green bean casserole, corn, rolls...oh, and we had wine. DID WE EVER! then lori came over, then rachel came over, then wyatt and his friend katie came over. did i mention i drank a lot of wine that day? margaret tells me she has many "terrific (and incriminating) photos and movies" coming my way. i just may have to crawl in a hole and die. but it was fun. damn red wine. red red wine makes me feel so fine...until the next day. that was one wicked hangover. ugh.

last night i got all dolled up and went to a ra-sha-sha cocktail party. i had more red wine, but i kept everything under control. for once.

i will be spending new years with friends in the basement they converted into a kickass mini-irish pub, and in their hot tub. WOO! but that means i think i might have to buy a new bathing suit, since mine is now too big. DOUBLE-WOO!

i always intend on sticking to the new year's resolutions i half-heartedly make, but i never do. this year my big ones are drink less, eat healthier, find an exercise regimen that i actually can deal with and stick to, and swear less. if i end up doing any of those things it will be a miracle.

ok, here's a coupla links:

did beck drive these people to suicide?!? this story is so crazy. if you read this, make sure you follow all the links that are provided. just so nutty.

*sigh* see? i can't even find more than 3 links. i'm pathetic.

i think i am going to dye my hair blonde today, maybe give myself some itty-bitty bangs. new year, new hair. yep.

so, yeah. i'll be back someday, when i actually have something interesting to say. peace out, boy scouts!

master of puppets (updated)

ok, the beck show last night was OUT OF CONTROL! i mean, i already heard about the puppets, but i was in no way prepared for how completely awesome those puppets would be! what a great show. here are some pics of the puppets in action at some other shows.

first of all, of course i made a shirt in the lobby with the iron-ons. each show had a t-shirt stand with iron-ons that are just like the stickers for the new album, and they press your new shirt for you right there on the spot. that was fun! i like being crafty. and my shirt came out pretty good, too. i'll take a picture of it later.

our seats totally kicked ass, we were right down front and on the aisle. the show opened with "loser," as it usually does. fine. we got a nice helping of stuff from "odelay" (hurrah!) and "mixed bizness" from "midnite vultures"...we got a few from "sea change," and a few from "guero." many many songs from "the information." he really mixed it up, though...the only "mutations" song was "tropicalia," i believe...which is always wonderful.

damn, those freaking puppets were so great! there was a little bitty puppet stage, and behind the puppet band there was a screen with psychedelic images on it...like the puppet stage was this alternate universe. i liked the big psychedelic puppet images displayed for us as well. everything the band did, the puppets did. at one point, beck gave the beck puppet some water, and the beck puppet gestured "thank you" to him. i had a giant smile on my face practically the entire time.

the band did the "eating dinner" thing like they did last tour, while beck did some acoustic numbers. i love acoustic beck. he did "do you realize??" and "end of the day" and some country song i didn't know that he said he just learned in nashville (by the gentry brothers or something?) and a really fun rendition of "debra." then the band started bangin' away on the tableware, and then i realized that the puppets had their own little table, too...with tiny glasses, tiny food...amazing. and he did "one foot in the grave" at this point. yay! OH! OH!! way before this point they did "minus." ?!?!?!? WOOOO, that was so cool. i love the beck.

before the encore, there was a philly-centric movie featuring the puppets. it was all about one of the guys training like "rocky," and beck was burgess meredith. SO GREAT!! the little puppet guy was training all over the city...at independence hall, at the liberty bell, running around with a cheesesteak...amazing. here's the puppet movie from the new york show that my friend matt went to. i can't wait until the philly video surfaces on youtube. the entire audience was losing it! there was uproarious laughter from everyone.

THEN, they came out for the encore in crazy suits! like, beck was in a bear suit!! and instead of a beck puppet, they had a stuffed teddy bear instead. at the end of the song, beck (in his bear suit) threw himself into the drum kit. then they came BACK OUT and played another one ("e-pro").

BEST BECK SHOW EVER!!!!!!!!!

UPDATE: pics here! and here!! also, not sure if it was really beck in the bear suit. but i would like to pretend that it was. and... the guy who operates the beck puppet has a blog!

kenny, john and i watched "blood feast" the other night and had a gay 'ol time:

earlier that day, chris and i drove around and enjoyed the autumn leaves and went to a robot museum. it was certainly a lovely day. when kenny and john were over, i drank too much and spent all of yesterday paying for it. ugggghhh...
so, tonight's the beck show. wheeee! i still feel a bit out of it, so i hope i perk up a bit. i'm sure i will...

don't forget, tonight is "faster, pussycat! kill! killl!" on tcm underground. they're showing "mudhoney," too. wooo!

okay. you need to check out this eBay seller's stuff. they have over 23,000 items for sale. all homemeade celebrity keychains, pillowcases, mousepads, etc. all with the most AWFUL photos of the celebrities that they could find! so insane! seriously, take a few minutes and do some searches. you will be amazed at how many celebrities are covered. you can get all your holiday shopping done RIGHT HERE!!! some of my favorites?

"leif garrett: once a temptation, always a temptation." i also like this one, where leif is "hot defined." ummm, yeah, he looks pretty hot in that pic. ?!?!

and finally, here's the new beck video, directed by michel gondry. i'm going to see beck on monday. wooooo! my friend matt called me the other night from the new york show, and said it was one of the best shows he's been to in years. sweet!

that's my secret lover to the left there. who is your secret lover?!

i wish they still made halloween costumes like they used to...with the weird papery-plasticy masks...

george "the animal" steele is a busy guy...motivational speaker?!? oooookay...

does this ever end?! let me know...i got bored with it pretty quickly.

beck's "the information" has arrived. i've been listening to it for about a week (thanks, internet!) and i lurve it. but i will indeed buy it tonight, so i can have fun with the stickers. there are 4 different sets to choose from. wheeee!

woo!

orchestra seats, baby! 8th row!! (i am weak. WEAK, I TELL YOU!)

see? work can be FUN!

coudal partners has a fun contest going...a "six degrees of separation" thing with bob dylan. the grand prize is every bob album that there ever was. sid vicious was an easy one for me, but condoleezza rice required some research.

and speaking of bob (as i am so inclined to do), here's his book tarantula, an impossible book that is displayed in an impossible format for you to read.

"the office" premiere is tonight! (that's what she said!!)

so, beck tickets go on sale this morning. will mondo be responsible and (*gasp*) NOT GO because of all these new responsibilities with the new house, and because i am going to 4 shows in the next month? or will she not be able to stand the notion that beck will be within an hour of her and SHE WON'T BE THERE?? stay tuned to find out...

time for a quickie

i have been so super-busy today, but i wanted to quickly post this. the pop candy blog wants to know if you have a good "meeting a celebrity" story to share for a podcast. so, i sent an email with my beck story. i couldn't decide if i wanted to tell the beck story or the jack white story. i chose beck because, well, beck totally rules. and i didn't actually MEET jack white, he just poured champagne on me from a window. below is my submission.

the best celebrity encounter i have ever had was with beck, after a really small acoustic show in philly in the summer of 2002. i waited outside near his bus with a whole bunch of other people to catch a glimpse and maybe say hi after the show. when he finally came out, everyone swarmed around him and shoved things for him to sign in front of his face. beck was VERY nice to everyone, if a bit rushed. he finally was standing next to me, and when it was my turn he seemed to pivot on one foot and spin towards me (in that smooth funky way that beck moves), and he just stared at me and smiled (those eyes!!!). i nervously blurted out, "hi, i don't have anything for you to sign, i just wanted to say hi." beck blinked and, in a really sexy way, said hi back. then i said, "...but could i have a hug?" he rolled his eyes, grinned, and gave me a hug. my boyfriend at the time was with me, and he was snapping pictures the whole time. after the hug, i turned bright red/started shaking/got completely flustered. i started wandering through the crowd, bumping into people...i was totally out of my mind. i couldn't find the guy i was with, so i said, "ummm, where's my...uhhhh..." and i hear this clearly annoyed voice coming from the crowd: "UM, your BOYFRIEND?! i'm over here." and everyone around me, including beck, chuckled. :)

greetings from day 3 in the new house.

i took the day off from work today so i can make this place look like someone actually lives here, and find things we need (like pots and pans and junk.) i was up until 1 am this morning putting curtains up, finding the 2 guitars, 2 ukes, and accordian proper homes, getting the pictures out and about so i am motivated to hang them...etc. i'm enjoying my morning coffee right now, waiting for 10 am so i can get my dylan tickets. *le sigh*

i am also slightly bummed out that we won't have cable until tuesday...the raconteurs are playing all over the VMAs tomorrow or whenever it is. i assume i guess i can watch it online, but still. i am missing all kinds of good tv lately.

so, here are some links from other people's blogs. i can't seem to find anything good on my own this morning. :/

that murray wilson...oh boy. (via boing boing)

awesome beck interview. (via pop candy) i love beck. he is one of the few musicians out there that really tries to be creative and innovative with his music. he truly sees music as art. and in beck's case, it really is art.

at around 1:38 into this interview, paula abdul can no longer keep it together. i love it. (via a socialite's life)

POST TICKET-PURCHASE UPDATE: well, i'm not as close to the stage as i'd like to be (and usually am). i got row 1 in section 106. basically, if i am not at least 20 feet from bob dylan, i'm disappointed with my seats. i guess you could call me a "bob snob." oh well, maybe i can get better seats when the next presale goes down. but these seats are pretty sweet. and hey. at least they're on the floor.

oh, what a night...

so, i was taking some pics of my favorite things around my pad, and i feel one item in particular is so precious to me that i decided to write about it. i discussed all the shenanigans on the now-defunct mondo-retro.com, but here it is again. the jack daniels bottle you see is not part of the story, but has a great story of its own: i saw the damned just before halloween in 2001 at the north star bar in philly, which is a teeny tiny place, and i was practically on stage with them--i was standing on the steps leading up to the stage, literally 2 feet in front of captain sensible the entire time. during "smash it up," dave vanian held my hand and sang a few lines to me--i kid you not. i thought i was going to have a heart attack. anyway, at one point the band and all the people in the front were swigging from a bottle of jack like old drinking buddies---and i ended up with the empty bottle. :)

but here's the story of the dead flowers inside the bottle, taken from what i wrote when i got home from the strokes/white stripes show at radio city music hall in august of 2002:

HASTILY WRITTEN REVIEW OF THE WHITE STRIPES/STROKES SHOW 8/15/02

i have to get this all down before i forget the amazing details. this was, by far, one of the most magical rock-n-roll evenings of my entire life. everyone who knows me is aware of how into both these bands i am. the fun started before we even got in radio city music hall--fabrizio stuck his cute, curly head out of the dressing room window, and we snapped some pics of him and albert, and waved and stuff. very cool. little did i know my MIND WAS ABOUT TO BE BLOWN!!! wheeeeeeeee! oh, and as i was staring at fab, who should walk into the stage door DIRECTLY BEHIND ME but meg white!!! she looked very chic and beautiful, of course.

the white stripes were amazing. really, really amazing. they did "isis"!!! i can't remember all the songs or the order, but this is what is coming to mind right now:"dead leaves...", "hotel yorba", "apple blossom", "offend in every way"...sheesh, my mind is mush. oh, "we're going to be friends", complete with audience handclaps. nice.

by the time the strokes hit the stage, people were just completely losing it with glee. the vibe at this show was AWESOME. they plowed through practically all of "is this it?", plus "meet me in the bathroom," "you talk too much," and "ze newie."it was one of those few times that i was completely, absoloutely, honestly MOVED by music. the build-up to the end of "alone, together" was like the greatest, most electrifying moment, man...i rocked out like i haven't rocked out in YEARS. the strokes just totally do it for me, man. it was just one of those shows. poor jules had to sit on a stool the entire time, since his knee is not better yet, but it did NOTHING to hinder the energy WHATSOEVER. jack joined them for "new york city cops", which may have been the most insane moment of the entire night. or so i thought...

as we were leaving, we walked by the same window that fab had been leaning out of earlier. i saw the top albert's 'fro peeking out above the sill, and we realized, "hey, they're in there!!" so, we (along with a bunch of other people) walked over to the window, and ALL OF THE STROKES and JACK AND MEG leaned out of the window, waving, talking to us...and everybody was screaming like they were the beatles. it was amazing. they/we stopped traffic on 51st street and everything. i was lucky enough to be right below the windows, and they just started tossing stuff down at us---first it was guitar picks and stuff, and then jack leaned out of the window with a bottle of champagne, and poured it into our mouths and on our heads...and down my dress, actually. it was amazing. he threw down flowers (yes, i got flowers, too!), chopped vegetables from their backstage trays, albert threw julian's (i think) shirt, jack took his shirt off and threw that, meg was tossing ice down to the sweating masses...people, it was MAGIC. then fab sat on the ledge as if he was going to throw himself out of the window, and everyone outstretched their arms and began chanting, "jump! jump!" it was a riot. they were LOVIN' it. another hilarious moment was when matt came to the window, and, as he was wearing a red t-shirt also, everyone thought he was fab. so, people were losing it, screaming, "fab! fab!" and then fab slowly rose up from underneath the window, and pointed at us and laughed, like "GOTCHA!" what a scream. oh, what a night. if you all could see the looks on their faces...they were all in complete fantasy rock star land, and seemed genuinely happy, elated, surprised, and flabbergasted that we just all stood there, telling them how much they rocked, how much we loved them, etc. WOW. i am still totally losing it. i can go to sleep tonight (well, this morning), with the satisfaction that jack white essentially showered me with flowers and champagne, and jules waved at me. like, right at ME. wheeeeeee! i seriously think i'll be telling my kids that.

(ed. note: the photo, taken by the guy i was with at the time, shows jack mid-pour. i was directly under the stream. the photo next to it was taken inside the dressing room by some professional photographer-type guy.)

next day: i am (slightly) more coherent than last night. i heart the strokes!! i heart the stripes!! what a genuine moment the whole show was. i predict some write-ups about this show all over the place. and of course i will provide that info to all of you. yes, you. THE MASSES. i have it in my head that people are actually following my escapades...oh, and if the sweet couple i met at the show, whom we were going to hang with after the show---i'm sorry we lost you guys! after all that hub-bub...well, you know. you guys were so nice. they pointed out the fact that ellen barkin was there, only a few rows in front of us, and looking SMASHING!

ahhhh, memories. :) i still have that damn carrot in my freezer. oh, and two days after that show, i had 4th row beck tickets for his tiny solo acoustic warm-up tour, and after the show i met and hugged him. man, that was one bitchin' weekend...

the best things come to those who wait

so, my "big" Christmas present from my mans finally came in the mail yesterday...he told me it was going to be late. i actually forgot all about it...but WOO-HOO, i was *so* happy when i saw it! gertie liked it, too.

"mutations" is far and away my favorite beck album, and most definitely in my top 3 of all time. i like that it is dj swamp's also, and not some random industry record guy. but i couldn't help but wonder...why did dj swamp sell it or give it away? meh, whatever. me so happy! i was so happy, in fact, that i staged a little impromptu dance party on the couch...

"it's getting biblical out there"

so, last night was the beck show. and for a show that i felt kind of indifferent about since the day we ordered the tickets, i had the best time ever! it was really a totally amazing, awesome, incredible show! let's start from the beginning...

the entire east coast was drenched and flooded yesterday by this insane crazy rainstorm that lasted for like 2 days. driving to the show, which is about an hour and a half away from where i live, sucked just a bit at first. we left in what we thought was plenty of time to get there and get a good place in the pit. the traffic wasn't too bad, but it was really difficult to see, people were driving slow, etc. the roads were totally flooded in a lot of places. but it was okay. until we got to philly. HOLY CRAP! we missed the exit for the bridge, and then we ended up finding it and got to camden, nj where the show was. cool, we thought. we made it, no accidents, plenty of time. well, we somehow screwed up again and ended up in THE SHITTIEST part of camden ever. and camden is pretty bad; it made #1 on the "dangerous cities" list last year. but, then again, the city i live in was on that list, too, at like #4 or #8 or something on the medium-sized city list. anyhoo, we ended up nearly stalling the car and getting stranded in what can only be described as a small pond. 2 people in front of us tried to get through, and failed. we didn't want that. we somehow made it through (yay!) but that didn't change the fact that we were still lost. so chris goes into some convenience store and asked for directions. the girl told him the wrong directions, and he knew it. so then we see a cop at another convenience store and asks a him directions. the cop and this other guy tell him that the whole area is flooded, and we should seek higher ground and just go home. we were like, ?!?!? yeah right! he said, "there is no ingress or egress!! turn back now!! get a refund and take the high road!!!" *LOL*

it was funny that we went through so much to get there. we were both totally relieved that we made it in one piece. it was also funny that the tweeter center was literally right down the road from where we stopped for directions. and the sad thing is, i'd been to the tweeter center before, many times! ahhhh, i'm such a tool.

but it was all worth it. there was hardly anyone there when we arrived, so we got in the front row. yay! and beck just kicked ass. it was the last night of the tour, so he warned that he was going to be "long-winded" and he did indeed play a good mix of stuff. some entire songs, some medleys: "pay no mind," "truckdriving neighbors downstairs," "where it's at," "novacane," "hotwax," "debra," "he's a mighty good leader," "lonesome tears," "do you realize??", "lost cause," "hell yes," "black tambourine," "e-pro," "nicotine and gravy," "mixed bizness," "golden age," "tropicalia," "clap hands," uhhhh...i can't think of any more right now. oh yeah, "loser." it was really just incredible. beck thanked us all for braving the storm, and mentioned that it was "getting biblical out there." the roof was leaking onto the stage and everything. it was just SUCH a great show, one of the best beck shows i've ever seen. and front row makes any show better. i'm usually totally impressed with beck live, but this show was just GREAT! woo-hoo!

some good moments for me: during the acoustic "tropicalia," beck wanted audience participation with the horns at the end. well, like NO ONE was doing it, except me and this girl behind me. beck pointed to us and said, "well, at least some people over here know it." we were like, damn right! and then during the acoustic "debra," he paused after "i wouldn't do you like that..." and me and the same girl screamed out "zankou chicken!!!" and beck closed his eyes and went, "yeeeaaahhhhh..." and it was funny. beck was personable as usual, and his band this time around is awesome. they definitely had a good stage thing going, what with the dinner break and everything. i wish i hadn't read about that before the show, and was surprised. they brought out a table and the band sat down to dinner while beck did his acoustic stuff, and they ended up banging on the silverware and providing percussion for "clap hands." it was very cool. i read reviews about beck not being very energetic lately, but i didn't find that to be the case at all. he broke out a couple sweet dance moves. no splits or anything, but there were moments that he couldn't resist.

i've got a coupla crappy camera phone pics...but they really aren't that special. there was one point where beck was standing directly in front of me with his banjo and a crazy look on his face, and chris tried to get a pic, but all he got was a blur becuase beck jumped off whatever he was standing on at that exact moment. blah.

this fine fellow has groovy pics of the show, and also had a heckuva time getting there. man, the people who were there really deserved a kick-ass show, as we all risked life and limb to be there.

p.s. mcrorie was pretty good, too. he did an 80's metal medley that was pretty sweet.

evan dorkin has a blog

yep. he sure does.

oh, and i totally fell asleep last night. i woke up at the end of letterman with dave saying something like, "wow, that beck certainly is energetic" and maybe something about aerobics. but i could have been dreaming that. blah.

so old, so tired

i'm going to try to stay up late tonight so i can catch beck on letterman, and gear up for the show this weekend. i don't know how long i'll make it, though. these days i'm a mess if i stay up past midnight during the work week. the other night i was watching a movie and fell asleep, without warning, with 5 minutes left to go. 5 stinking minutes! and it was a hitchcock movie, therefore those last 5 minutes were really important. bah. that happens more and more to me these days. i have no idea i'm even about to fall asleep. just *BAM* i'm out. so lame...or maybe i have narcolepsy. i didn't even think of that...

so anyway, yeah. beck. good 'ol beck. i'm happy to be seeing him again, it's been over 2 years . should be good; in cleveland he sounds like he's still rockin' it like he always does:

Beck was equally comfortable singing or rapping. He also played a range of instruments, including acoustic and electric guitars, harmonica, banjo, turntables and harmonium.

He channeled Bob Dylan for the folk-flavored "Pay No Mind (Snoozer)." Later, Beck turned in his best Prince imitation to the soulful tune of "Mixed Bizness."

A few bars of Queen's "We Will Rock You" found their way into "The Golden Age," a twilight ballad.

"I don't know where this is going," Beck said. "I like it, though."
